History of the Koonce Pear
I first heard rumors of a variety of Pears bearing my family name, in the summer of 2006 from my cousin Lindell Koonce (1926 – 2018). He had stumbled upon the image above in an internet search and it triggered childhood memories. We later discovered that the photo came from a book titled, The Pears
Chronicling the history and revival of the Koonce Pear, an heirloom fruit variety that was nearly lost to time. Authored by Nicholas Koonce, a descendant of the original cultivator, the site narrates the pear’s origins. The Koonce pear gained early recognition when it was showcased at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, praised for its quality. It enjoyed a period of acclaim before falling in to obscurity and was quite nearly became extinct. It was eventually found preserved in another nations gene bank, and after nearly two decades in quarantine, it is once again being propagated in the U.S.A.
